Natural hair is not only healthier to wear, it’s also fun to flaunt. Styling possibilities are endless and the outcomes are always unique to each head of hair. Below are three styles for varying lengths of curly, coily hair with links to videos demonstrating exactly how to achieve these looks.
Gel Twists
If you have decided to transition to natural hair by cutting off all of your relaxed or processed hair (aka the Big Chop), you might wonder what other sorts of styles you can wear besides your TWA (teenie weenie afro). Gel twists or single strand twists are a great option as it involves a minimal amount of manipulation to hair strands and can last up to 1-3 weeks once completed. This style is best executed on freshly shampooed and conditioned damp hair. Depending on the length of your hair, you can accomplish the individual twists with a barber’s comb, rat tail comb or your fingers and our Curly Hair Soufflé. Click here to see the video for how it’s done.
Bantu Knots
Bantu knots are a great updo option. They are also an easy-to-achieve protective style. If treating as a variation on a twist-out—as in a knot-out—bantu knots are a great way to accentuate and create curl patterns for any hair type from straight to coily. Although this style is being applied to shorter hair, Bantu knots can be worn on much longer lengths. It can be applied to wet, damp or dry hair and doesn’t require any styling tools other than your two hands—although you may want to use a comb to part your hair into sections. In the video here, our model uses our Natural Hair Style Cream to achieve her look.
Two-Strand Twists
As with Bantu knots, two-strand twists can either be worn as-is as a protective style or unraveled to showcase beautiful wavy, curly grouped strands. Although being demonstrated on shoulder-length hair, this style works just as well on shorter or even longer hair. You can vary the number of twists you have to anywhere from a few thick, chunky twists to several rows of twists throughout your hair. Applicable to wet, damp or dry hair, you’ll only need your hands and a comb. We used our Natural Hair Style Cream and Monoi Oil to achieve the look in the video here.
