Another great option for rocking a natural style is locs. Although locs have actually been around for thousands of years (ancient Egyptians wore them), many are unaware of the benefits and upkeep involved in maintaining them. Today, however, there are great deal of hair care professionals who specialize in loc care and many products available (such as my Black Earth products) to flaunt clean, healthy, long, beautiful locs. But first, why loc?
Locs are economical. There is not much cost that goes into caring for locs. You won’t many styling tools or constant salon visits and you can upkeep your locs yourself. Even if you choose to visit a loctician for maintenance, you’ll only need to visit every six to eight weeks.
Locs are a permanent protective style. Because your hair is already gathered into locs which help to maintain strength and moisture, you will not need to have your hair placed in any other style such as braids, twists or wigs.
Locs require little to no daily fuss. Locs are literally a get-up-and-go hairstyle with little to no prep required at night or in the morning to look good.
Locs promote great hair growth with minimal shedding. Because your hair is in a permanent protective style—and you won’t have to manipulate your hair often—there is much less wear and tear on your strands. Your hair is free to simply grow and thrive.
Locs are easy to maintain. In rain or shine, dry or humid air, or cold or hot weather, your loc style will not change, shrink, flatten, fall or look anything less than cool.
Locs can be styled for any occasion. Locs can be every bit as versatile as any other natural hair look or protective style. Ponytails, updos, curls and crinkle styles can all be applied to locs to change your look from casual to classy to elegant. The video here is a great example of a beautiful and elegant curled loc look.
Why Loc Extensions?
If you are transitioning from relaxed to natural hair and know that you want to loc, loc extensions are a great option for you. A good loctician can start locs on your natural roots and apply loc extensions to give you the look immediately. Moving forward, you’ll simply trim your loc extensions regularly as your natural hair grows and your locs mature until your extensions are gone and only your own hair is left.
Also, if you already have long locs but have straggling unlocked hair in a few spots, you can apply a loc extension in those spots to give your style a uniform look. Watch the video here to learn how.
