The fact is that if you don’t have naturally straight hair, the oil your skin naturally secretes from the sebaceous glands in your scalp has a trickier time coating the strands of your hair from root to tip. It’s a matter of a straight path versus a curvier path. When your curvier strands don’t receive moisture from your natural oils they are in greater danger of becoming dry and suffering damage. The following reasons are why it is important to care for your hair with a moisturizing and conditioning routine.
Moisture helps to retain growth and prevent breakage.
While the hair’s moisture has no bearing on how quickly or long your hair will grow, it does help you keep the hair that you do grow. When hair is properly moisturized, elasticity is improved in the hair thus making it more resistant to damage and breakage. It is dry hair that snaps, breaks and gives you the impression that your hair does not grow.
Deep conditioning helps prevent damage by replacing moisture and proteins in the hair shaft.
A properly applied deep conditioning treatment (with heat) allows the hair shaft to swell and the cuticles to open to receive nutrients from the conditioning product.
Moisture improves the look and feel of your hair.
Dry hair is dull, brittle and lifeless. Healthy hair moves, is shiny and is soft to the touch. Properly moisturized hair is healthy hair.
Deep conditioning helps to restore luster and strength to your hair.
Again, good-looking hair is healthy hair—which is strong, shiny and soft.
Styles last longer and look better on properly moisturized and conditioned hair.
Well-moisturized and conditioned hair tends to have greater success in grouping together in defined curl patterns.
Of course, your daily, weekly and monthly routine will depend on your particular hair typeand your individual styling demands. In general, however, I recommend:
For characteristically dry hair, oil products such as our Gro Hair Gro™ Bamboo And Coconut Milk Growth Oil, PhenomonOil and Shea Coco Monoi Oil and cream products such as our Curly Curl Cream work to restore and lock in hair moisture in hair with tighter curl patterns. Soufflés such as our Shea Coco Curly Hair Soufflé work nicely to add and seal in moisture on looser natural curl patterns without weighing hair down.
For preventing breakage, products like our Great Detangler moistens and conditions to allow for styling without damage and better curl pattern definition.
To combat thinning, our Hairline Help 2-in-1 Plus™ Bamboo And Biotin Edge Grow works to hydrate, repair and restore the type of hair loss that takes place around hair edges.
For both moisturizing and damage prevention through deep conditioning, it’s a good idea to treat yourself to a biweekly or monthly hot oil treatment with any of the oils mentioned above or give yourself a hair strengthening treatment masque with our Repair & Restore. Also use a good leave-in conditioner for daily styling such as our Intense Moisture™ Bamboo And Coconut Milk Strengthening Leave-in Conditioner or Shea-Coco Condition.
