THIS MONTH, MAKE MENTAL HEALTH A TOP PRIORITY

I just love the month of May. Typically during this time of year, the weather is consistently warmer but not too, too hot. In Atlanta, all kinds of festivals take place including the Atlanta Jazz Festival and Caribbean Carnival. It’s my birthday month! This week is National Women’s Health Week but the entire month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

FELLOW MOMS, I SALUTE YOU. YOU GIVE ME LIFE.

Mother’s day is this Sunday. All across the nation, children are fervently working on rose-adorned projects that may or may not include letters, poems or odes on the subject of motherhood. Most of these little gifts will be hilarious. Come Sunday, there will be breakfast in bed for some and post-church buffet for others. The rest of moms may experience a much-needed spa day, or at least a full blessed hour of silence in a candle-lilt bath. Moms everywhere will appreciate whatever gift their day happens to bring and recognize the sentiment behind every gesture. It’s what mothers do.

GETTING MY HAIR VACATION-READY: PROTECTIVE STYLING WITH CURLY CURL CREAM LOTION AND CURLY CURL GELLO

It’s that time of year, Ya’ll. The weather is getting nice. Retailers are basically giving swimwear away, and despite not being six years old I’m headed to recess the moment I catch a glimpse of anything bearing the slightest resemblance of sunshine.

AFROS IN BLOOM: HOW TO ROCK HAIR FLOWERS THIS SPRING

For me, spring is wash-and-go season. After a long winter of doing a bunch of protective styles to hide my ends from low temperatures, I’m leaving braids and twists alone for a minute. I just want a fat afro to complement the closet full of sundresses I’ll keep on rotation until it dips below 60 again. Low manipulation doesn’t have to be boring or routine though. Flowers have always been my go-to for adding some glow to my hair. A bright pop of color always looks super cute with fresh curls or a picked-out afro.

LOCK HER UP! MY FOREVER HAIRSTYLE/LIFESTYLE

About seven years after I went natural, I locked my hair. They were traditional locs, and they grew quickly and thickly. Within 5 years, they were well past my shoulders, hanging midway down my back. In 2009, I got the bright idea to “unlock” my locs, after watching a video showing the process. A week into process, I looked like Samuel Jackson in the movie Unbreakable. Once again I found myself in a barber’s chair, cutting off what remained of my locs and starting over. So I spent the next two years, free falling natural, starting over from a short Caesar cut like I’d done when I first went permless. I returned to locs in 2011, but this time, I had sisterlocks installed. BEST DECISION FOR ME—EVER.
